Getting into shape and exercising more is one nearly everyone's list of New Year's resolutions. Dancing is a great way to accomplish your goal of getting into shape and exercising more without getting stuck in a boring fitness routine. It can be a fun alternative to a regular workout and help you develop a skill that you can use throughout your whole life.

When using dancing as your fitness routine, make sure and take it seriously. Just like with any other workout, you have to push yourself to get the best results. Also just like any other workout, you need to stick with the dance workout program you choose. Just attending one dance class will not magically get you into shape. Stick with a class for a few months.

Before beginning your dance workout or any workout, stretch your muscles for 10-15 minutes. Failing to stretch before beginning your dancing workout can lead to pain and even serious injury. You can continue to warm up your body with flexibility exercises, jogging or jumping jacks.

While you are dancing, be sure to do each step with precision. Only doing a dance moves part of the way or not correctly will not help you to get into shape. Stretching your body to do the moves with precision push your body to burn fat and build muscles.

There isn't any specific style of dance that you need to do to get in a good workout. Whether it is swing, hip-hop, modern, ballet, ballroom, zumba or another style, as long as you are moving your body you're on your way to a great workout experience.

Wearing the right clothes is an important part of a dance workout as well. Try to avoid clothing that will restrict your movement. Tighter fitting clothing is preferred for dance workout. A good pair of sneakers is extremely important as well to protect your feet while working out. Find a pair of shoes with good tread, cushioning and ankle support.

There are a number of different resources you can use to learn to dance and start your workout. You can take a class with a partner, you can learn by watching dance videos in your home, hire a professional teacher or read books that will teach you how to dance.

Make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated while you are working out.

After your workout, do a few cool down exercises to allow your heart rate to slowly come back to normal. Stretching for about 10 minutes following the workout is a great way to allow your body, especially your muscles, to cool down.

A dance workout can help burn fat, tone and build muscles and develop coordination. So let your body move to the music and get into shape!
